From Big Sky Country to the Atlantic Coast: What Moving Across the Country Taught Me

People often ask me what it was like moving from Montana to Hampton Roads.
The short answer?
It was exciting, overwhelming, emotional, and one of the best decisions we've ever made.
Like so many military families, I learned that a move isn't just about packing boxes and finding a new house. It's about leaving behind your routines, your favorite coffee shop, the people who know your story, and the place that feels like home. Then, almost overnight, you're building an entirely new life somewhere you've never lived before.
Looking back, there are a few things I wish someone had shared with me before we made the move.
If you're preparing for your own PCS or relocating to Hampton Roads, I hope these lessons help make your transition a little easier.
1. It's Okay to Feel Excited and Nervous at the Same Time
Moving across the country is emotional. One moment you're excited about new opportunities, and the next you're wondering if you made the right decision.
I remember feeling both at the same time. That's completely normal. Give yourself grace during those first few weeks. You don't have to have everything figured out the day you arrive.
2. Hampton Roads Is Much Bigger Than I Expected
Before moving here, I thought Hampton Roads was one city. It isn't. It's a collection of communities including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, and York County. Each has its own personality, commute, housing styles, and lifestyle. Understanding how those communities connect, and how they fit your daily routine, makes a huge difference when choosing where to live.
3. Everyday Life Looks Different Here
One of the biggest surprises wasn't the scenery. It was the little things. Life here revolves around bridges, tunnels, waterways, and military installations in ways I had never experienced before. People don't just ask how many miles away something is.
They'll ask, "Do you have to cross the tunnel?" That simple question can completely change your commute.
4. Home Isn't Just a House
When you're moving thousands of miles, it's easy to focus on finding the right home. But what you're really searching for is a place where life feels comfortable again. It's finding your grocery store. Your favorite walking trail. The coffee shop where the barista starts recognizing you. The park where your dogs love to play. Those little routines are what make a new place feel like home.
5. Community Doesn't Happen Overnight
One of the hardest parts of any move is leaving your support system behind. Friendships take time. So does learning your way around.
The good news? Military communities are incredibly welcoming because so many people have been exactly where you are.
Don't be afraid to introduce yourself, join local Facebook groups, attend community events, or simply ask for recommendations.
Those small connections quickly become your new community.
6. Ask Questions, Lots of Them
No one expects you to know everything about a new area.
Ask about neighborhoods.
Ask about schools.
Ask about commuting.
Ask where people grocery shop.
Ask where locals spend their weekends.
The more questions you ask before your move, the more confident you'll feel after you arrive.
7. Every Move Is a Chance to Build Something New
Looking back now, I'm incredibly grateful for the journey.
Moving across the country wasn't always easy, but it introduced us to a community we love, friendships we'll always cherish, and opportunities we never would have experienced otherwise.
Sometimes the biggest moves lead to the greatest adventures.
