Moving to San Diego? Set Up These 10 Things During Your First Week

One of my favorite parts of helping military families relocate is seeing the excitement that comes with arriving in San Diego. After weeks, or sometimes months, of planning, packing, and saying goodbye, you're finally here.
But let's be honest...
The first week after a PCS can feel overwhelming.
Boxes are everywhere, everyone's asking where things are, and it can feel like your to-do list grows every time you check something off. After helping hundreds of families relocate to San Diego (and living the military life myself), I've found there are a few things that make settling in much easier.
If I could hand every family a checklist when they arrived, it would look something like this.
1. Find Your New Favorite Grocery Store
One of the quickest ways to feel at home is figuring out where you'll do everyday life.
Whether it's Costco, Trader Joe's, Sprouts, Ralphs, or your neighborhood grocery store, take a little time to explore what's nearby.
You'll also start discovering local farmers markets and specialty shops that make San Diego unique.
2. Schedule Your DMV Appointment
If you'll be registering a vehicle or updating your driver's license, don't wait.
DMV appointments in California can book several weeks out, so it's worth scheduling early, even if your appointment isn't for another month.
3. Update Your TRICARE Information
Once you've arrived, make sure your family's DEERS information and TRICARE enrollment are up to date. If you're enrolled in TRICARE Prime, this is also the perfect time to choose or update your Primary Care Manager (PCM). You can do both through your milConnect account, and you can also use TRICARE's official tool to find or change your Primary Care Manager.
If you have children, it's also a great time to identify nearby pediatricians, urgent care clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals before you actually need them.
4. Learn Your Daily Commute
One thing that surprises many families is that San Diego traffic can completely change depending on the time of day.
Before your first day at work, do a practice drive to your installation during your normal commute time.
The difference between a 20-minute drive and a 50-minute drive often comes down to timing.
5. Find Your Go-To Coffee Shop
Every neighborhood seems to have that one place you'll end up visiting more than you expected.
Whether you're meeting a friend, catching up on emails, or taking a break after unpacking, finding your local coffee shop is a small thing that makes a new city start to feel familiar.
6. Join Local Military Facebook Groups
One of the fastest ways to feel connected is through the local military community.
These groups are full of recommendations for everything from childcare and dog groomers to the best beaches and upcoming community events.
Military families are incredibly good at helping one another, and these groups often become an invaluable resource.
7. Explore Your New Neighborhood
Before you spend your weekend driving across San Diego, take time to explore close to home.
Walk your neighborhood.
Visit a nearby park.
Try a local restaurant.
Find your closest Target/ Walmart.
Sometimes the best discoveries are only a few minutes away.
8. Bookmark Your Local Resources
Save links you'll use throughout the year, including:
Having everything in one place saves a surprising amount of time.
9. Pick One Fun Thing to Do
It doesn't have to wait until you're fully unpacked.
Grab fish tacos.
Watch the sunset.
Visit Balboa Park.
Walk along the beach.
PCS moves can be exhausting, and taking a break to enjoy why you moved here helps everyone recharge.
10. Give Yourself Grace
This may be the most important one.
A PCS isn't just changing addresses, it's starting new.
It takes time to learn new roads, meet new people, and build new routines. Some days will feel exciting, while others might feel overwhelming, and that's completely normal.
Before long, the grocery store will feel familiar, your favorite coffee order will be memorized, and you'll have your own list of places you can't wait to recommend to the next family moving here.
One day, San Diego won't just be where you're stationed, it will feel like home.

From Cabrie
As a military spouse for 17 years, I've experienced multiple PCS moves myself. I know how exciting, and overwhelming, a relocation can feel.
Helping military families isn't just my career, it's something that's personal to me. Whether you're still waiting on orders or you've already arrived in San Diego, I'd love to be a resource for you.
If you have questions about neighborhoods, schools, commuting, or simply want to know where the locals go for the best tacos, don't hesitate to reach out.
I'd be honored to help make your move a little easier.
