If there's one thing I wish someone had told me before we moved to San Diego, it's this:
Traffic here is no joke.
After 17 years as a military spouse and multiple PCS moves, I've learned that every duty station has its own surprises. For San Diego, traffic was definitely one of them.
Like so many military families, I initially focused on finding a beautiful home in a great neighborhood. I looked at school ratings, parks, proximity to the beach, and how many miles it was from base. On paper, everything looked perfect.
What I didn't realize was that 15 miles in San Diego doesn't always mean a 15-minute drive.
Depending on the time of day, that same drive can easily turn into 45 minutes, or even an hour.
A Commute Can Shape Your Entire Day
Whether you're stationed at Naval Base San Diego, MCAS Miramar, NAS North Island, Camp Pendleton, or another installation, your daily commute has a huge impact on your family's routine.
An extra 30 minutes each way may not sound like much, but over time it means:
Less family time in the evenings
Earlier mornings
More stress during the workweek
More time sitting in traffic instead of enjoying everything San Diego has to offer
When you're choosing where to live, I always encourage families to think beyond the map.
Instead of asking, "How close is it?" ask yourself:
How long will this drive actually take during rush hour?
Is there more than one route to base?
Will I have to cross one of San Diego's busiest freeways?
Will my spouse or kids be making this commute every day, too?
Those answers often matter much more than the number of miles.
There Isn't One "Perfect" Neighborhood
One of the things I love most about San Diego is that every community has its own personality.
Some families dream of living near the beach in Coronado or Point Loma. Others love the newer neighborhoods in Chula Vista, Poway, or Eastlake. Some want to be close to great schools, while others prioritize a shorter drive to work.
The right neighborhood isn't the same for everyone.
It's about finding the balance that works best for your family, your budget, and your lifestyle.
Sometimes choosing a home that's just a little closer to work means gaining an extra hour together every day and that's a trade-off many military families are happy they made.
Local Advice Makes All the Difference
One thing I've learned after years of helping military families relocate is that online maps only tell part of the story.
Living here gives you a completely different perspective.
